Student of the Month

Lilian Nguyenphuoc

Every month we feature a different SSS student. It’s not an easy decision since all of you are doing a wonderful job! Chosen SOTM's recieve a prize for being selected.

Age: High School ;)

Instrument: Viola

1. What are you playing/working on right now?

I’m working on the first and last movements of Bach Suite 5 in C minor, the first movement of Walton’s Viola Concerto, and becoming a wonderful scale machine.

2. When did you start in SSS?

I started in the studio in the early spring of my eighth grade – it’s been just over three years!

3. What drew you to the viola?

I switched from violin to viola in middle school because I felt that the viola’s warmer tonal color better matched the vision of the musician I wanted to be. It was the right choice, because I find myself coming back to my viola even when I’m struggling with it.

4. What is your favorite musical experience to date?

I think my favorite musical experience to date was attending SYSO’s Dances of the Americas the March of last year, which broadened my perspective as a musician and led me to discover music from composers I had never heard of before.

5. In what other activities do you participate?

Other than lessons at the studio, I am most notably a part of the Knowledge Bowl club at my school, a consistent library-goer, and a dabbling creative writer.

6. Any other tidbits about yourself that you want others to know?

Alongside music, two other passions in my life are the literary and culinary arts, for which I’ll be forever grateful to my mother for encouraging me to grow in both.

Sorry We Missed April
